Course Description: Opioid use disorders are at epidemic levels in the United Sates. Medication assisted treatment is the most effective treatment for opioid use disorders. Buprenorphine is approved for treatment in office-based settings. Buprenorphine can only be prescribed by physicians who complete an approved, standardized 8 hour training course as outlined in the Drug Addiction Treatment Act of 2000. Legislation to permit buprenorphine prescribing by PA’s and NP’s is currently being finalized.
Objectives:
Upon completion of this training the participants will:
- Have the training to apply for a waiver to prescribe buprenorphine
- Identify and assess patients who are appropriate for buprenorphine
- Have specific knowledge concerning the use of buprenorphine to manage opioid use disorder
- Discuss the psychiatric and medical co-morbidities associated with opioid use disorders
